I am Voleak Srey Gibb, I was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and grew up in Southern California. I am a mother to two nature loving and inquistive boys. They enjoy exploring and constantly finding new adventures. My husband, Christopher Gibb has supported me to live my dreams. My passions includes my family and life long friends, traveling, reading, writing, and the Hope Center Project in the province of Takeo, Cambodia. My mom is and has always been a great influence in my life. My mom is my hero.
Boy, did I dream. I traveled; I saw the world through books. Every Saturday mornings, my father would take us to the Buena Park Library and let us check out books. My passions for learning were ignited with historical figures, biographies, first female historical figures. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of many; these characters came to life in me. I remembered how I started to write down their characters that make them achieve their goals. For example, Clara Barton, the first American nurse who founded the Red Cross, and Florence Nightingale, to name a few. My imaginations and love for books continues through my youth and today. There was not enough time in the day for me to travel and see the world. I wanted to travel, I read traveling books. I visited museums, the Eastern states where American History begins. I loved reading about the English monarch, the French, and Western civilizations.
At Buena Park high school, we studied English writers. I treasured and my zeal for great Victorian writers, poets, and artists were a part of me. I lived and breathed life in the early 19th century. But, the most influential and lifelong passion that brought forth my love for writing is reading Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. Imaginations and kindred spirits, the idea of allowing you to be who you are and living in the moments and sharing it with others that have the same value with honesty is to me a priceless gift. I dreamed of writing and having my works published.
The Adventure of Best, the Water Buffalo is my first published work and a dream of a life time to make a reality. Allowing children of all ages to dream, to travel to distance land and learn a new culture and most of all, appreciate our similarities and honoring our differences. Together, we learned about the strengths of friendship.
I have traveled to Cambodia on numerous occasions, mostly due to a death in the family, rarely for joyful trips. But, I was able to see the value of traditions of cotton and silk weavings, hand crafted items that the local people make. I thought this is an important skill not to keep, so I buy the products and sell them to build a Hope Center in Takeo, Cambodia.
Join me in making lives better for others, elderly in Takeo, young people without dreams or goals, join me in changing lives one day at a time, one person at a time, and most of all, winning the hearts and minds of the people one heart, one mind at a time. Thank you, and Many Blessings,
Voleak Srey Gibb
